Fraud alert: Be wary of high-pressure sales tactics
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has not approved third parties to make unsolicited contact with homeowners to register or participate in the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP). The Government of Canada, NRCan and its family of brands (ENERGY STAR, EnerGuide) never solicit over the telephone, or by email or go door-to-door asking to enter Canadians’ homes to inspect, sell, or rent heating and cooling products. EnerGuide home energy evaluations are performed by licensed service organizations only at the request of homeowners. Learn how to recognize energy scams.
No cost retrofits for your home
The new Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP) will start to be delivered in 2025 through our partners in provinces and territories. When in place, CGHAP-funded programs will provide low-to-median-income homeowners and tenants with no cost home retrofits, such as insulation and heat pumps, to help reduce monthly energy bills, while reducing energy use and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
CGHAP will use a direct install approach, meaning that the program delivery organization will handle all the logistics associated with planning and paying for home retrofits on behalf of the participating households. This approach is meant to make it easier for low-to-median-income households to retrofit their homes at no cost. That means that participants will not be asked to pay out of pocket to participate nor will they need to schedule a series of contractors to undertake major retrofit projects.
Program information
More information on how CGHAP will operate in each jurisdiction will become available as regional programs are developed and rolled out across the country. Organizations interested in participating in the delivery of CGHAP – including in the provision of home assessment or retrofit activities – should contact their provincial or territorial energy efficiency entity for more information.
NOTE: Households seeking to apply for CGHAP-funded retrofits will need to submit applications to the relevant program in their province or territory. Links to these programs will be provided here as they become available (expected in 2025). The Government of Canada is not accepting applications from households to participate in the program nor from other organizations interested in being part of program delivery. The latter should reach out to the energy efficiency entity in their provincial or territorial government for more information.
By working together, governments can offer effective and regionally tailored programs that improve home energy efficiency, both comfortably and affordably.
Indigenous Communities
CGHAP is also supporting residential energy efficiency in Indigenous communities. Dedicated support for Indigenous partners will be delivered differently from the main funding stream, taking advantage of existing tools across federal departments to reduce administrative requirements and help more funds go directly toward the priorities of First Nations, Métis and Inuit partners.
