Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to design and install a CO2 compression and conditioning system, transportation pipeline, and sequestration well to address approximately 40,000 t CO2/year of emissions from the Interpipeline Cochrane Natural Gas Extraction Plant.

Expected Results

This project aims to:

  1. Validate carbonate reservoirs for CO2 sequestration using advanced plume monitoring and modelling; 33% of Alberta CCS hub proponents plan to use carbonate formations.
  2. Validate reservoir capacity and develop a new monitoring, measurement, and verification process to estimate storage efficiency of carbonate formations.
  3. Capture and sequester 40,000 t CO2/year, improving Cochrane’s air quality and lowering national emissions.
  4. Advance the Bow Valley Carbon Hub (BVCH), intended to provide 5 Mtpa CO2 sequestration capacity for the Calgary region.
  5. Advance SensorEra’s plume monitoring technology, which can use the passive seismic monitoring system to dynamically track the subsurface CO2 plume movement.
  6. Enable the University of Calgary and Memorial University to publish academic studies on predictive modelling of CO2 plume movement and subsurface interactions.
