Project Objectives
The objective of this project is to design and install a CO2 compression and conditioning system, transportation pipeline, and sequestration well to address approximately 40,000 t CO2/year of emissions from the Interpipeline Cochrane Natural Gas Extraction Plant.
Expected Results
This project aims to:
- Validate carbonate reservoirs for CO2 sequestration using advanced plume monitoring and modelling; 33% of Alberta CCS hub proponents plan to use carbonate formations.
- Validate reservoir capacity and develop a new monitoring, measurement, and verification process to estimate storage efficiency of carbonate formations.
- Capture and sequester 40,000 t CO2/year, improving Cochrane’s air quality and lowering national emissions.
- Advance the Bow Valley Carbon Hub (BVCH), intended to provide 5 Mtpa CO2 sequestration capacity for the Calgary region.
- Advance SensorEra’s plume monitoring technology, which can use the passive seismic monitoring system to dynamically track the subsurface CO2 plume movement.
- Enable the University of Calgary and Memorial University to publish academic studies on predictive modelling of CO2 plume movement and subsurface interactions.
