Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to better align end user electricity demand with municipally owned renewable production to reduce costs to the utility and customers. The project will leverage advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), an innovative collaborative hosted service model with partner electricity utilities for complex systems integration and dispatch (AMI, customer information systems, ADMS, DERMs, etc.), and new customer rate structures to deliver intelligent grid management.

Expected Results

This project aims to:

  1. Showcase a collaborative delivery model with partner electric utilities that leverages existing smart grid capabilities at lower cost.
  2. Promote both utility and customer benefits by coupling utility business solutions with the creation of customer-centric programs and rates to encourage energy efficient behaviour and DER adoption.
  3. Accelerate grid modernization to optimize electricity system assets, improve system reliability, resiliency, and increase distributed energy resources penetration.
  4. Assess techno-economic potential of non-wires alternatives to meeting grid needs, and set a technical and financial model for similarly sized utilities to expand beyond poles and wires.
  5. Share knowledge and insights to enhance public awareness.
