Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to rationally design and optimize nanostructured tin-based anode materials as alternatives for carbon-based anodes to improve energy densities in lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries.

Expected Results

This project aims to:

  1. Develop high-energy-density batteries with reduced reliance on graphite, strengthening supply-chain resilience and creating skilled jobs in the battery sector.
  2. Lower battery costs, enabling more affordable electric vehicles and sustainable energy storage for Canadians.
  3. Foster domestic growth through collaboration with local materials companies, establishing a new upstream and downstream sodium-based supply chain and applications.
  4. Advance sodium batteries toward lithium-ion battery performance, providing a complementary, less resource-dependent technology.
