Since the release of the Framework for Collaboration on the Path to Net-Zero in July 2024, Canada, Nova Scotia, and Indigenous partners have achieved significant milestones:
-
March 2025: Intentions Paper - Offshore Carbon Dioxide Storage in Sub-Seabed Geological Formations
The intentions paper provides information and an early engagement opportunity to seek views and input on offshore sub-seabed geological CO2 storage. Nova Scotia has raised the need to assess the applicability of CO2 storage in the offshore. This and future engagement activities will provide Indigenous groups, provincial and territorial governments, stakeholders, and the public the opportunity to provide their views.
-
March 2025: Canada Infrastructure Bank commits $217 million for Nova Scotia to New Brunswick Reliability Intertie
The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) announced $217 million in equity financing for the Nova Scotia to New Brunswick Reliability Intertie, which will improve the reliability of interprovincial power grids and support the expansion of renewable energy production. The CIB investment will help Nova Scotia construct the 160-kilometre, 345-kilovolt transmission line.
-
February 2025: Canada and Nova Scotia Join Global Efforts to Accelerate the Deployment of Offshore Wind and Help Power Canada’s Economy
The Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia joined the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA), which aims to create a global community of practice to accelerate offshore wind development. This partnership provides access to international and industry expertise, strengthening the foundations of the offshore wind industry.
-
February 2025: The Government of Canada Invests in Port Infrastructure for Atlantic Canada
The Government of Canada announced an investment of up to $25 million for the Halifax Port Authority, including $22.5 million to accelerate the development of the Halifax – Hamburg green shipping corridor, establishing a hydrogen production facility and preparing for alternative fuel-powered vessels, as well as $2.5 million to improve supply chain efficiency and port capacity.
-
January 2025: Nova Scotia’s Green Choice Program Greening the Grid, Creating Jobs, Improving Energy Independence
A competitive, independent procurement process selected 6 wind farms to support Nova Scotia’s Green Choice Program, providing clean electricity to 11 large-scale customers. By 2028, these projects will generate over 2,000 gigawatt hours of clean electricity annually.
-
October 2024: Advancing Carbon Management Opportunities in Atlantic Canada
The Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia collaborated with experts from industry, academia and other provincial governments at Net Zero Atlantic’s Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Roundtable in Moncton, New Brunswick, advancing the development of a CCS Road Map for Atlantic Canada.
-
October 2024: The Government of Canada Invests in a Clean Economy for Nova Scotia
The Government of Canada announced up to $22.5 million to support EverWind’s hydrogen production and export facility in Port Hawkesbury. This funding will enable EverWind to develop infrastructure for green ammonia transport, including a loading arm, a pipeline and tugboats to move and load ships safely.
-
October 2024: Bill C-49, an Accord on joint management, received Royal Assent
Bill C-49, alongside Nova Scotia’s Bill 471, received Royal Assent, marking a historic step toward the governments’ joint management approach and will help unlock the enormous potential of offshore renewable energy. These bills establish the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Energy Regulator, boosting the region’s role as a clean energy leader. The bills were proclaimed on January 31, 2025.
-
September 2024: Ensuring Access to Affordable, Reliable, Secure and Non-Emitting Electricity in Nova Scotia
The Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia agreed to negotiate a $500-million federal loan guarantee to reduce the cost of refinancing the Maritime Link, which enables clean power to flow from Newfoundland and Labrador to Nova Scotia, and prevents a significant near-term increase in the province’s electricity rates. The loan guarantee was formally issued in December 2024. This support builds upon the province’s action to purchase $117 million of the Fuel Adjustment Mechanism balance to reduce rate increases for residential customers. Further, both governments announced a common understanding that the Clean Electricity Regulations provide flexibilities needed to help Nova Scotia’s electricity system grow and decarbonize while ensuring it is affordable, reliable and non-emitting.
-
August 2024: Government of Canada and Nova Scotia to Plant up to 21 Million Trees and Restore Ecosystems Affected by Wildfires
The Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia announced a joint investment of $40.5 million to plant 21 million trees by 2031. This initiative is part of Canada’s commitment to plant 2 billion trees and supports the restoration of ecosystems affected by the 2023 wildfires, creating green jobs and strengthening climate resilience.
-
July 2024: Government of Canada Expands Clean, Reliable and Affordable Electricity in Nova Scotia
The Government of Canada allocated over $192 million for 6 clean electricity projects in Nova Scotia – through Natural Resources Canada’s Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways program (SREPs) and the Electricity Predevelopment Program – which will help drive down energy bills across the province. The investments include $117.6 million for 3 large-scale battery energy storage systems and $75 million for wind energy projects.

July 2024: Nova Scotia's Collaboration Framework released
The Canada-Nova Scotia Regional Energy and Resource Table (Regional Table) was established in October 2022 and, in collaboration with the Kwilmu'kw Maw-klusuaqn Negotiation Office (KMKNO) and with input from key interested parties, released a Collaboration Framework in July 2024. The Collaboration Framework identifies 6 areas of opportunity: carbon management, clean electricity, critical minerals, the forest bioeconomy, hydrogen and marine renewables.
